What are the Pilates apparatus and props?

With the growing popularity of reformer and mat Pilates (and for good reason!), we thought it would be a perfect opportunity to share some insight into the variety of apparatus you can find in a Pilates-specialised studio. Each piece of equipment offers unique benefits, challenges, and support.

Pilates Apparatus

Back when Joseph Pilates was cultivating the Pilates method (then Contrology) he began adapting hospital beds to promote movement for veterans after WWII whilst they were still in rehab. This is where the spring concept came from, which is a key element to many of Pilates Apparatus we have today.

The Reformer – One of the more well known options today, and there is a reason. Versatile, easy to use and understand, challenging but also guiding. There is a lot to love about the Reformer and what it can deliver for movement.

The Cadillac/Trapeze Table – Named after the car as being the best of best of the Pilates Apparatus. Extremely versatile, slightly more complex and can take a bit of time to get used to, but also very dynamic and free. The Cadillac is also a favourite of ours for clients who need some extra TLC, but there are also many super fun and challenging things as well. Your immigration is your limitation on this wonderful apparatus. For group classes at Waves we use the Tower to simulate most of what you can do with the Cadillac.

The Wunda Chair (and newer Exo Chairs) – At one point Joseph decided to make a chair which you could have in your living room to relax on, and then flip it upside down to turn it into an exercise device. This was the basis of what we know today as the Wunda Chair. Using Springs as well for resistance, this apparatus is focused more to the intermediate to pro Pilates goer. It can take some time to warm up to, but once you get the hang of it, it provides a wonderfully deep, challenging and fun work-out that is difficult to beat.

The Ladder Barrel – One of the lesser known apparatus as it tends to take extra training and expertise to teach with confidence on this apparatus. With its lovely barrel shape it provides wonderful support for spinal movements, and provides a unique stability challenge in many different positions. Also very versatile, and often used for individual consultations or circuit classes.

The Spine Corrector – Often connected with the Ladder Barrel, the Spine Corrector also supports through many different spinal movements and challenges stability in many ways. For many it is a simpler apparatus to use due to its grounding nature, but can also bring a great challenge and spice to your Pilates practice.

Pilates Props

In addition to the Pilates Apparatus we also use a variety of Props with the aim to challenge, or support or just to add fun into your Pilates practice. At Waves we mainly use these for mat classes and in individual consultations.

Spinefitters – A concept that has been adapted a few times in the Pilates world, but has now become very popular across the world. These can be used in a call to increase awareness of where your body is, add an extra stability challenge and provide some playful variation.

Oov – Invented in Sydney, Australia to support and challenge the curves of our spine, this is a fun and versatile prop. It does take some time to get used to how to use it and teach with it, but give it a whirl and you will begin to really enjoy what it has to offer.

Magic Circle – An adaptation from the Joseph original, this resistance ring provides both an extra challenge or support depending how to use it. Great for promoting communication between the left and the right side of the mind and body. A fantastic prop for all.

Pilates Balls – These are our small Purple/Blue (colour depending on who you ask) balls which are a great to add some extra support into positions, and provide a little extra feedback to the body. We use them a lot in Essentials and Beginner classes, and then tend to go towards the Magic Circle for intermediate/advanced clients.

Weighted Balls – These simple weighted balls will spice up any Pilates practice. Often we forget how effective even a small change in weight can be to challenge our control and motor patterns. These balls as a simple yet effective challenge and fun change to any class.

Swiss Balls – The large exercise ball, also super versatile and very fun addition to any class. Many of the exercises on the reformer or tower you can mimic with the ball. A great addition to any home workouts as well.

Franklin Balls – The Franklin Method ® is a method of movement heavily focused around the power of imagery and function, created by Eric Franklin. One of the original props he created were the Franklin Balls, a great tool for playing with connections and feelings within the body.

Elastic Bands (long & infinity) – At Waves we have both long elastic bands (2 ends, 1.5m in length) and infinity bands (round ones). Both are great for adding some extra resistance, or giving some extra guidance in a class setting.

Hedgehogs – Our most unique prop, the hedgehogs (as we have called them). Fun spikey things to challenge in standing positions, but can also be used in many ways to challenge stability and provide extra feedback.

Foam Rollers – A well known prop for rolling our muscles on, however, the best use of a Foam Roller is actually for movement! Imagination in the limitation here and there is a lot you can do with a Foam Roller to challenge even the most advanced of you.

So many great options!

We are super lucky at Waves to have such a large amount of Pilates Apparatus and Props. Whether you are looking for a Reformer class, wanting to challenge your Pilates autonomy with a Circuit class, or looking to play around and have a challenge in a mat class, we have lots of options for all. For those of you wanting more support and guidance, and really connect into your body and mind, the apparatus and props are also great at enhancing this experience.

We love movement, we love play, and we love connections. Keen to try an apparatus or prop you haven’t tried before? Send us a message or ask your usual instructor in your favourite class what you’d like to try. As we are all Comprehensively trained across all elements, no worries!

And of course, for any diehard Pilates fan there is nothing more challenging and satisfying than a simple, no props Mat class with just you and gravity to overcome. Ah the serenity!
