Maar wat houdt dat brede en vaak abstracte begrip nu precies in? De Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie omschrijft mentale gezondheid als \u201ceen toestand van mentaal welzijn die mensen in staat stelt om met de stress van het leven om te gaan, hun capaciteiten te benutten, goed te leren en werken, en bij te dragen aan hun gemeenschap.\u201d [1]<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"634\" data-end=\"1044\">Mentale gezondheid wordt gevormd door \u2013 en be\u00efnvloedt op haar beurt \u2013 hoe we denken, voelen en handelen in het dagelijks leven. Goede mentale gezondheid brengt veerkracht met zich mee: het helpt ons om uitdagingen aan te gaan, emoties te reguleren en de focus te behouden. Mentale gezondheid draait dus niet alleen om je goed voelen, maar vooral ook om goed kunnen functioneren \u2013 \u00f3\u00f3k wanneer het even tegenzit.<\/p>\n<p><!-- notionvc: cdd35880-1bbb-4c97-b9c8-53c369ef1a40 --><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vc_col-sm-4 wpb_column vc_column_container\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section><section class=\"l-section wpb_row height_medium\"><div class=\"l-section-h i-cf\"><div class=\"g-cols vc_row via_flex valign_top type_default stacking_default\"><div class=\"vc_col-sm-12 wpb_column vc_column_container\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"g-cols wpb_row us_custom_ab613840 via_flex valign_top type_default stacking_default\"><div class=\"vc_col-sm-7 wpb_column vc_column_container\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"wpb_text_column\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><h3 data-start=\"143\" data-end=\"186\">Mentale gezondheidsproblemen bij mannen<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"188\" data-end=\"767\">Wanneer mensen de term <em data-start=\"211\" data-end=\"241\">mentale gezondheidsproblemen<\/em> horen, denken ze vaak aan stress, depressie of angst \u2014 klachten die statistisch vaker bij vrouwen voorkomen [2]. Toch tonen studies een ander patroon bij mannen. In sommige Westerse landen zijn mannen verantwoordelijk voor zo\u2019n 75% van de sterfgevallen door zelfdoding. Ze hebben ook een aanzienlijk hogere kans op middelenmisbruik en impulscontroleproblemen. Interne signalen zoals verdriet, hopeloosheid of angst worden vaak geminimaliseerd of zelfs over het hoofd gezien \u2014 zowel door mannen zelf als door hun omgeving [3].<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"769\" data-end=\"1183\">Een mogelijke verklaring voor deze verschillen ligt in de manier waarop mannen met psychische klachten omgaan. Onderzoek toont aan dat mannen gemiddeld genomen vaker kiezen voor probleemgerichte of vermijdende strategie\u00ebn, zoals harder werken, zichzelf afleiden of middelen gebruiken [4, 5]. Emotionele pijn blijft daardoor vaak verborgen achter uitwendig gedrag zoals woede, terugtrekking of risicovol gedrag [3].<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1185\" data-end=\"1457\">Omdat dit soort gedrag vaak wordt gezien als een <em data-start=\"1234\" data-end=\"1252\">sociaal probleem<\/em> in plaats van als een signaal van onderliggende nood, blijven veel worstelingen onzichtbaar. Eigenschappen zoals stoerheid, emotionele controle en zelfstandigheid worden vaak al van jongs af aan aangemoedigd bij jongens en mannen. Hoewel die kwaliteiten in bepaalde situaties zeker waardevol zijn, kunnen ze het moeilijker maken om te herkennen wanneer diepgaandere ondersteuning nodig is [3].<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"515\" data-end=\"825\">Ondanks een groeiend bewustzijn verklaart dit ook waarom er nog steeds drempels zijn voor mannen om hulp te zoeken. Veel mannen geloven dat ze hun problemen zelf moeten oplossen, maken zich zorgen over oordelen van anderen of hebben het gevoel dat de bestaande hulpverlening niet afgestemd is op hun noden [6].<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"827\" data-end=\"1066\">Zo leggen veel therapievormen sterk de nadruk op het uiten van emoties. Hoewel dit zeer doeltreffend kan zijn, voelt het voor sommigen onnatuurlijk \u2014 zeker voor wie geleerd heeft om sto\u00efcijns te blijven en emoties onder controle te houden.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"w-separator size_small\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"g-cols wpb_row us_custom_ab613840 via_flex valign_top type_default stacking_default\"><div class=\"vc_col-sm-7 wpb_column vc_column_container\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"wpb_text_column\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><h3 data-start=\"186\" data-end=\"269\">Moeten we dan het hele denkkader van mannen overhoop gooien om hen te helpen?<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"271\" data-end=\"429\">Moeten we mannen aanmoedigen om voortdurend over hun problemen te praten, al hun emoties te delen en meteen naar een psycholoog te stappen? Natuurlijk niet.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"431\" data-end=\"1261\">Het ondersteunen van de mentale gezondheid van mannen vraagt om erkenning van verschillen en het aanbieden van hulpvormen die aansluiten bij diverse manieren van omgaan met stress. Eerste stappen kunnen bestaan uit fysieke activiteit, het stellen van haalbare doelen, een duidelijke dagstructuur of het geleidelijk opbouwen van emotioneel bewustzijn. Duurzaam welzijn bouw je op door veerkracht te versterken op je eigen manier \u2014 niet door \u00e9\u00e9n specifieke manier van uitdrukken op te dringen. Actie ondernemen, problemen aanpakken en opnieuw grip krijgen op het leven kan het zelfvertrouwen versterken en de mentale gezondheid verbeteren. Sociale steun speelt hierin een belangrijke rol, niet per se door volledige emotionele openheid te eisen, maar door begrip, aanmoediging en mogelijkheden tot actieve, constructieve coping [7].<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1263\" data-end=\"1848\">Tot slot: ieder mens is uniek, en er bestaat geen kant-en-klare oplossing die voor iedereen werkt. Mensen beschikken over een indrukwekkend vermogen tot herstel, en velen vinden zelf opnieuw balans na moeilijke periodes. Hopelijk is duidelijk dat goedbedoeld advies zoals \u201cpraat er gewoon over\u201d vaak tekortschiet tegenover de complexiteit van de realiteit.
